| For Sunday, June 10 | | | SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Kings 22:1-9 | | | KEY VERSE: But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek the counsel of the Lord" (1 Kings 22:5). | | | Seek God First | | At a conference I once attended, Lori Salierno shared how she annually took a trip to Calcutta to work at the Missionaries of Charity Mission founded by Mother Teresa. On one visit prior to Mother Teresa's passing, Lori found herself overwhelmed by all the needs the mission faced on a daily basis. Yet she was stunned that Mother Teresa spent no less than an hour in prayer each morning. Lori asked one of the Sisters of the mission how they were able to handle it all. The response was that at the beginning of each day, Mother Teresa would simply pray, and then obey. She always sought God's will first, in everything.
Ahab was not used to seeking God for anything. His life was replete with self-service escapades and hedonistic behavior. Before engaging in a bloody war, the last thing he would think of doing would be to seek the will of God.
Jehoshaphat acted as the voice of reason in the face of recklessness. Jehoshaphat brought sanity and wisdom to the table, encouraging Ahab to seek God's voice first.
It is always wise to seek God's will, even in the small things of life. Only then can we be assured of God's blessing. | | -Jeff Edmondson | | | SING TO THE LORD | Yes, Jesus is the Truth, the Way, That leads you into rest.
